I was worrying about some asbestos in the kid's schools. We get these papers saying they check for them and have found some and they are handled by AHERA which stands for Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act. The schools are checked every six months. I wasn't really worried about it much to my surprise until the other day. My son who is in 7th grade is in band. He said he knew this might worry me but, they had asbestos in the stairs in their band room. He wasn't concerned. He only told me because he was talking about how the band teacher wanted to get them taken out but it would cost too much because of the asbestos. I guess the kids are always tripping over them and she just didn't like them. I'm glad he told me anyway. I called and talked to someone in charge of all this stuff and she said the asbestos was in the glue that binded the carpet to these stairs the kids sit on to play instruments. She said it could only be released into the air if it was sanded or something like that. The woman did call the band teacher and talked to her. She said she could submit a form for a bid to see how much it would cost to get them removed. I just have to trust that he is safe.
I also have a friend who I've know for quite a few years and she lives in an old house. She mentioned that her house has asbestos in the popcorn ceiling. She gave me some boots that didn't fit her and I was so excited by it. The next day I ended up giving them back because it was bothering me too much thinking that there might be some asbestos fibers in them.
Hate to provide reassurance, but I worked as a regulator in a state asbestos program for 4 years. It really is true that most asbestos is bound and not easily released into the air- the glue would be a good example of that. Often better just to leave it than to take it out, which guarantees some level of disturbance (although if done correctly, no exposures will occur).
ReplyDeletePipe insulation and popcorn ceilings are the types that can more easily get in the air, although the risk in the shoes would be minute.
You're more calm about the school situation than I would be. And I wouldn't be able to make the phone call - I hate doing that. :) Good luck fighting the obsessions. ♥
ReplyDeleteHi, I came across your site as I am suffering from extreme asbestos ocd. I fear so much for my 3 year old son. I want to have more children but my ocd is so out of control my husband won't consider it. I found it reassurning that Ann wrote there is no exposure if the removal of asbestos is done properly. I am finding it hard to trust that it will be done properly though. (I want to have it removed in our home so we can renovate). I am discovered a lack of trust is the main cause of ocd, would you agree?

ReplyDeleteI hope you find some comfort in just trusting the person that is doing it. I know it's not easy. I'd feel the same way as you. It probably will be the worse during it and then your anxiety should be relieved when it's all done. I hope you find the courage to do it if you can. I know that all the schools in our area do have asbestos. I believe they are not exposed to them and I have just let it go. I'm sorry you are experiencing this. Maybe you could go stay somewhere for a few days while they remove the asbestos if possible.
Hi Kim, we just moved from that house, so pleased we have done that and my husband agreed but now he is being so horrible and has brought things into the house from the old house! Things like his leather riding jacket which I knew he was bringing and I thought he would keep it in the garage but he has brought it into the house and threw it down on the carpet, it is as though he is trying to get a reaction from me, which of course he does, I wish we had gone our separate ways instead of making such a huge committment and taking a new mortgage out together, I feel I have noone to talk to and noone understands, I am devastated right now. I am trying to get a grip and tell myself there couldn't be any asbestos on the jacket, but it was stored under our house where the problem was, why is he doing this to me!?! Not just me, our son, as it is such a horribly unhappy environment for him to be in, what the hell have I done, I have made a big mistake. I feel I cannot cope with this and my husband has now contaminated the new house, he has killed every last bit of love I ever had for him, all this on valentines day, that's saying something isn't it.
